What Antioxidants Do
To fully understand what antioxidants are, you need to know first the term associated with it the most which is the free radicals. Free radicals typically cause damage to the cells whenever they react with other compounds found in the body, eventually leading to oxidative stress. Antioxidants fight these free radicals to prevent oxidative stress.
Most of the chronic diseases nowadays are caused in part by high levels of free radicals. These include cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, macular degeneration, cataracts, and more. Therefore, the higher the level of antioxidants present in your body, the lower your risks of getting these diseases.
Where To Get Antioxidants
Antioxidants have different types, namely vitamins, minerals, amino acids, phytochemicals and hormones, among others. You can get these antioxidants from incorporating healthy foods into your diet. Some examples include:
- whole grains
- beans and nuts
Supplements, especially those with Vitamin E, Omega 3, magnesium, and potassium, can also increase the levels of antioxidants inside your body. However, be sure to check with your doctor first before taking them.
